I cannot hear the audio in the lessons. What is wrong?

You may have your device set to silent mode. Check the switch that you use to silence phone calls and text alerts and make sure it is not in the silent position. Or, you may need to turn off silent mode from the multitasking bar:

  1. Tap the home button to close any program that you might be using.
  2. Double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking bar.
  3. Swipe to move the bar right to reveal the audio controls. On the left side of the screen you'll see a speaker icon.
  4. If there is a slash though the icon this indicates you are in silent mode.
  5. Tap the speaker icon to turn off silent mode.
  6. Tap the home button to exit multitasking mode.
  7. Tap Algebra Explained and hopefully your problem has been resolved.

How do I view the answers for the study cards?

  1. Tap the little magic wand button that appears after about a 2 second delay between the back and forward buttons.
  2. If the wand does not appear for a certain study card it is because it is an informational study card without a hidden answer. Just click the forward button to proceed to the next card.

I cannot get Algebra Explained to launch. As soon as I tap on it, it shuts down.
What should I do?

  1. Tap the home button to close any program that you might be using.
  2. Double tap the home button.
  3. Once you have double tapped the home screen, a little area will appear at the bottom of the screen. In this area are all of the apps that you have run and quit but have not completely, completely killed. Basically, everything you have ever used.
  4. Hold your finger down on one of the app icons in this area until it starts to wiggle.
  5. On each of the apps that you would like to close down completely (95% of them) tap the little red "do not enter" sign. As you do this you will see that you have dozens of apps running in the background, all consuming memory and battery power. Once you close 95% of them your device will be much happier and have lots of memory and Algebra Explained will work again.
  6. Then tap the home button to exit multitasking mode.
  7. Tap Algebra Explained and hopefully your problem has been resolved.

The list of lessons is empty. What's wrong?

October 23, 2011 - An update has become available in the Apple App Store. Apply the update with a version number of 1.01.0004 or higher and the problem should disappear.

If you do not want to install the update, the following workaround should work for you. This problem is caused by having the device run low on memory. Please follow these steps:

  1. Tap the home button to close Algebra Explained.
  2. Double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking bar.
  3. Swipe through the icons until you find Algebra Explained.
  4. Newer devices: Swipe in an upward direction over the app to make the app completely shutdown.
  5. Older devices: Hold your finger down on the Algebra Explained icon until it starts to wiggle.
  6. Tap the little red "do not enter" sign.
  7. Because your device is low on memory we strongly recommend that you unload numerous other apps that you not need running in the background. Having a large number of background apps open causes issues like this AND reduces battery performance. If you are surprised to see every app you have ever used appear in this list you might want to close 95% of these down so they stop draining your battery.
  8. Then tap the home button to exit multitasking mode.
  9. Tap Algebra Explained and hopefully the lesson list will reappear.
